Wash & Go Methods to Define Natural Hair

Curl puddings, smoothies, creams, custards and elongators have become popular over the last few years. Since the natural hair movement, naturals sought to define their beautiful kinky, coily and curly hair. One hairstyle for defined hair is a wash and go. Long-lasting definition is a naturalista’s dream.  Depending on the techniques, a wash and go can be a fail or success. Below are methods to ensure your wash and go is a success.

Rake Method: Technique of raking fingers through hair to create defined curls, limit frizz, detangle and distribute product

  • Pro: Distributes product through hair easily            
  • Con: Shedding or pulling your hair out depending on your technique
  • Hair Types: All hair types

How to:

Step 1) Separate hair into sections

Step 2) For each section, apply your products (leave in conditioner, curl smoothie/pudding and gel)

Step 3) Holding the ends of the section, shake your hair. This enhances your    natural curl pattern

Step 4) Rake your finger through the section. Apply more products if needed

Shingling Method: Technique of separating and defining each strand of hair

  • Pro: Maximum definition, all your strands are coated with product
  • Con: Time consuming
  • Hair Types: All hair types, great for type 4 hair
  • How to: Step 1) Separate hair into sections

Step 2) For each section, apply your products

Step 3) Rake your finger through the section to distribute product

Step 4) Separate the section into smaller sections

Step 5) For each smaller section, separate each strand and smooth your finger down your hair

Detangling Brush: Technique of using a brush such as the Denman brush to define your hair

  • Pro: Product is distributed throughout hair
  • Con: May require more product application
  • Hair Types: All hair types
  • How to: Step 1) Separate your hair into sections

Step 2) Apply your products to the section

Step 3) Detangle your hair by finger detangling, raking or comb

Step 4) Separate section into mini sections

Step 5) Using the detangling tool, brush your hair upward

Praying Hands/ Clapping Method: Technique of using your hands in a praying or clapping position to define and smooth hair

Pro: Distribute products well, easy method and hair is a more elongated before drying

Con:

Hair Types: All hair types, great for type 2 and 3 hair

How to: Step 1)Section your hair

Step 2) Apply your products by rubbing it between your hands. Place your hands in a praying / clapping stance with your hair in between. Starting at the root, pull your hands down your hair.
